What Does Our Day Look Like?
Half Day Schedule
7:30am-8:00am Preparation, Arrival, and Choice Activities
Our students arrive anytime between 7:30am and 8:00am. This is a time for teachers and parents to make quick contact with each others on matters of the day. The students spend a few minutes getting ready for the day and ready to go into the academic portion of our day.

8:00-8:20 Group Meeting
This is an extremely important part of our day. This is when our students receive much of the foundational information and skills they will use in Kindergarten and thought out their school days. We work on proper listening postures, respect for teachers and friends, and patience. We also use this time to excite children about learning. We use songs, manipulatives, and games to educate our students.  We cover weekly or monthly themes, religious prayers and formation, and general age appropriate knowledge of mathematics, literacy, and some pre-writing skills.

8:20-9:20 Choice Time
At Holy Cross Preschool we seek to underscore the importance of playful learning. Teachers spend time creating works and centers for children that will give them an opportunity to learn from, and be enriched by an activity or use of a particular manipulative. We will often create tactile learning opportunities that support the work we did in our group meeting that day or all that week. During playful learning social interactions are created that allow children to test out their own theories of appropriate peer interaction. This time often gives teachers plenty of time to watch for mastery of certain skills and concepts using authentic assessment practices. We are also close by when peer interaction needs extra help with problem solving and conflict resolution.   

9:20-9:40 Clean up, Hand Washing, and Snack

9:40-10:00 Small Groups
With the help of aids and cooperation of other teachers we provide children with very specific skill development opportunities. Children are assigned to the different areas based on interest and or pre-determined skill development need. We assess our students many times through out the school year to determine progress and need for intervention. Report cards go home in December and again in May. 

10:00-10:30 Outside Choice Time
All of our children have access to outdoor play space in both our main building and new building locations.

10:30-10:45 Read Aloud
By this time our kids have been very busy all morning. They are ready to take a deep breath and listen to a story from our extensive school or classroom library. We use this time to cover many early literacy concepts like making predictions, left to right progression, and print awareness.

10:45-11:00 Music and Movement, Day in Review, and Departure
After a quick share about our day or a song to wrap up our fun, our morning only students prepare for departure.
